Maritime and Admiralty law protects those who are working at sea. When you work for a company out at sea you want to know that you are protected if you are injured. No one understands the law any better than a lawyer who has experience in Maritime and Admiralty law. They know what to expect and how much you can expect to receive. When finding a lawyer to represent you there are a few things you will want to keep in mind.

When you meet with your lawyer for the first time there are a few papers you need to take with you that your lawyer will need in order to prepare your case and represent you better. You will need to bring a copy of your accident report and all reports from the doctor, hospital, and any recovering therapy appointments. You will also need a list of all medical bills that have been sent to you during your recovery.

You will also need to document all the work you have missed and estimate how much longer you plan to be off because of your injury. You may want to get a signed paper from your supervisor stating the amount of time that you have been off work since your accident. Make a list of how your injury has affected your life and the lives of your family members.

If you had insurance through your employer you will need to bring your booklet of insurance coverage as well as a copy of the company insurance policy listing what is covered in case of an accident.

If you have already filed a claim then you will need to bring a copy of your claim and any correspondence that goes along with that claim. If you have received a payment for any work or medical expenses while you have been off due to your injury then you also need to bring a copy of what has been paid. Always make a copy of the check before you cash it.

It’s also important to document the scene on the day that you were injured. You want to report any weather conditions, how many were in the crew working, if something wasn’t working right, if there were enough men to do the job, what condition your work area was in, did you report anything to your immediate supervisor regarding the current working conditions.

When you are first injured you need to make yourself a file that can hold all paperwork regarding your injury. Remember that every paper becomes a document that you may be able to use in court in order to win your case. Sometimes companies do not pay the benefits that are due to the workers and this leaves the worker unable to work, all the medical bills, no compensation for time off work, and it leaves them unable to live their life the way they are use to living. Your lawyer can help you with your case.
